November 14, 2014: As you read the media commentary surrounding Cardinal O'Malley's interview with 60 Minutes, please keep in mind the following:
1) Cardinal O'Malley seems to be answering the journalist's question regarding "zero tolerance" by the Church for protection of any priest abusers in general. He does not seem to be addressing "zero tolerance" just in particular against Bishop Finn. Bishop Finn does not fit into the category of the cases where a priest was not taken out of ministry, or was moved around, and Cardinal O'Malley must know this. The specific "urgency" for the Holy See, that is reported in the media, seems to be in response to cases where bishops were "not prosecuted" for not protecting children, or for not removing priests from ministry.
2) When the media says "failure to report child abuse", this statement is erroneous. The indictment and conviction are for "suspected child abuse". There was no evidence of child abuse. Inserting "suspected" is accurate reporting of the charge, indictment, and conviction.
3) In addition, we agree the Holy See needs to say something about the case.
